A Bad month at Dell Inc.

June 22, 2008 / by SilverDell

I just wanted to share my experience with working for Dell. If anyone has the opportunity, make sure that you wear your shield and keep your amour up and be ready for the fight. They do not care about you, they do not care if your a team player, they don't care what you know. Here is my expeirice working for them in the Billerica MA office. I ended up writing to Doug G and Michael Dell about my experience there. By the way, the folks at MessageOne were at the office in Billerica and were just bought out by Dell. It appears that the folks that were bought out really don't like working the dell way, so what they are doing is putting in a video conference screen, without dell knowing it (they do now) and will be able to sit in the conference room and connect with one another to try and work behind dells back with technology. NICE!!!! So here's what happened to me, while I was trying to work the Dell's way.

Doug and Michael,

I just want to say that my experience at Dell will be one that I will never forget and I will definately BLOG about. First - I want to say thank you for the opportunity of working at Dell. Even though I wanted to work the Dell way, nobody at Silverback did, nor do they like working for Dell. Second, they still have up Silverback domains which are not needed, but how else are they going to have access to internet email or AOL instant messages up on their screen. Third, How nice people drink on the job, they have a whole liquor cabinet full of hard alcohol and have what they call 'Embassy' meetings and drink at the kitchen area, while on the books as well as going golfing and the fitness center - how nice. Fourth, the guy that runs the IT department, Kevin Van, LIED to Doug about me and I'm looking into this with my lawyer to see what I can do. I was brought on board to do system administration, I have the knowledge and the skills that he didn't and he was afraid that I was going to take his job. He doesn't know how to install or create a raid 5, I do, he doesn't know how to work with virtual machines, I do, I was wondering why a few weeks ago him and Tim Walker would go in the network room and do things, Tim had to show Kevin and they wouldn't let me participate, I guess that's called Job security huh? I noticed a change in Kevin a few weeks ago and asked him what was going on - he said "oh I don't think your working out here" I said, why? Kevin's reply was, you smoke. I informed him that I go once at 10am and once at 2pm, then he said, you left an emply box on the cart. I wasn't done installing the desktop and I didn't think that I had to run and dispose of the empty box at that time. Are those reasons to put in a bad word with Doug to have me let go? Then he said something about sleeping - now that's a down right lie, I NEVER slept on any job. Yes, I admit one day having a migrane and I was on a con call and had my eyes closed due to the florescent lights, but NO, I was not asleep, because Kevin came in and we chatted. I don't know how you can let a 25 year old, who knows very little about team playing, and technology run this center - I really can't wait to blog all this. We got a visit last week from the ceo of messageOne, but I guess your just going to have to google my blog to find out what they said and what they are going to install in Billerica. Now they are all afraid that the company in Billerica is not going to be needed anymore because a lab was built in Austin - actually the only folks that are needed in Billerica, are the SE's. I think that you should change the name of that company to SilverDell, because there isn't anyone there that wants to be a part of Dell, nor is anyone there living and working the Dell way.

It doesn't sound like you were appreciated at Dell. There was too much immaturity on the staff. I'm sure your expertise will be more wecome with another employer. But, you need to develope a thick skin. People are sometimes jealous and cruel. It's a dog eat dog world. Bosses can't be too friendly, or they will lose control. Don't be to sensitive. If you don't show emotion, people won't get any fun out of picking on you. Be strong. You'll do well. It always helps if you're a christian. The Lord works things out for you.
